What is FMEA Training?

Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) is the industry standard way to ensure that risk and wastage of resources (such as labour and time) are kept to an absolute minimum in any given organization’s product development activities or manufacturing workflow, both in terms of the end product itself and in terms of the process which works towards creating the end product.

Waste can occur at any point throughout a given automotive industry’s procedural pipeline, and any place it does occur is going to provide a problem that could be otherwise avoided by practicing FMEA techniques. FMEA training is the process of instructing your organization’s leadership—as well as any employees who could have an influential effect on the product’s design or the design of any manufacturing process your organization employs in its day-to-day operations—as to how to go about applying these techniques, so that waste and risk in your company is kept to an absolute minimum.

What’s the Difference Between PFMEA and DFMEA?

PFMEA stands for Process Failure Mode Effects Analysis, while DFMEA stands for Design Failure Mode Effects Analysis. They’re essentially two different ways to apply FMEA, with each of them being useful at different stages in an automotive organization’s overall workflow.

PFMEA is a means of applying FMEA to processes at the design and management level of a process, and is a great way to learn more about the effectiveness of your organization’s processes from the top down. On the other hand, DFMEA is a use of FMEA for product design purposes. While they both draw on the same core base of knowledge, each is different enough from the other that they deserve a module each in our training scheme.

Translating Customer’s Requirements

Who is the module for? How long will the module take? What are the objectives of the module?
  • Project/Program Managers
  • Product Design Engineers
  • Process Engineers
  • Quality Engineers
  • Production Managers
  • Purchasing Managers
  • Materials Managers
  • Quality Managers
  • Supplier Quality Engineers
4 hours
  1. To meet product design skill requirements within IATF 16949
  2. To meet Customer Specific Requirements for launch and on-going production activities
  3. To demonstrate core competencies of multi-disciplinary design team for product launch
  4. To meet competency requirements to conduct Supplier Quality Audits
  5. To prepare for taking Core Tool Assessment Exam

As part of either FMEA course, we’ll also teach a module called Translating Customer’s Requirements, which is suitable for managers and engineers alike. The goal of this course is to learn how to better integrate customer-specific requirements into your organization by effectively ‘translating’ those requirements into real, tangible characteristics. This is useful both for product launch and on-going production activities.

How does FMEA Training work in Canada?

FMEA training involves instructing the company’s employees about how they can apply FMEA strategies and concepts in their everyday business environment. In doing so, the company is granted a self-sufficient workforce that can continue to innovate and come up with creative solutions to any problems that may arise down the line, effectively guarding themselves against the unknown by familiarizing the organization with the very latest in risk assessment practices .

Any employees who work with us towards earning their FMEA competency, will leave the course with a thorough understanding of what FMEA really means, as well as the capacity to apply what they’ve learned in their everyday work environment. It’s an invaluable way to increase the productive value of the workforce you already have and can be considered an investment in your own staff as much as into the processes those same staff members are going to be refining.

How The ISO Edge Can Help With FMEA Training In Canada

Our FMEA training courses are done through an instructor-led educational format, which takes place in separate spaces for DFMEA and PFMEA. Each section is designed to start with the basics of the topic, before steadily increasing both a) the amount of material being covered, and b) the demands on the students, so that by the end they can be considered fully-qualified FMEA-ready employees. Reference materials will be provided, and all of the terminology taught to the participants will be industry-specific and up to date with the latest developments in the field of FMEA application.

Simulating Failures And Weaknesses

This is an important aspect to both of the two main FMEA applications, although its implementation varies, given that DFMEA is focused on simulating product failures and PFMEA simulates weaknesses in processes. Participants will learn how to create more effective and instructive failure simulations, which in turn will help your organization to become more robust.

Skill Improvement

Another aspect of the course which can be useful to organizations is the fact that employees are trained to the very latest level of proficiency in IATF 16949. Both DFMEA and PFMEA course participants will also be trained to meet the competency requirements they need in order to carry out Supplier Quality Audits.

How To Use Robustness Tools

A process that isn’t robust is a process that is going to run into a problem, sooner or later, which it simply can’t account for. The nature of these problems is that they typically can’t be thought up during the pre-emptive problem identification stage, which is why the process must be individually robust enough to withstand the added pressure it could well face at some point. If a problem of this description ever comes to pass, your company is going to have to pay for it in some way or other, be that with time, with capital, or with increased demands on your workforce. Cutting-edge robustness tools that are at the forefront of the automotive industry’s best practice guidelines will be taught to any participants undergoing our FMEA training scheme so that they’ll be able to safeguard any processes they help develop against issues that are impossible to foresee.

Reduced Test Failures

It’s only after a thorough analysis of the processes that go into creating products and services that we can understand how best to help you keep failures to a minimum. These failures can occur pre-release (we term these ‘test failures’) and post-release (think of patches, updates, re-releases). While these two kinds of failure can affect your organization in different ways, neither is ideal, and by making use of our FMEA training services, we’ll be able to help you streamline your organization in as many areas as possible, contributing to an overall leaner business which can run without the standard sub-par quality control and consistency issues.

Why Choose The ISO Edge For FMEA Training?

By employing The ISO Edge as your FMEA training firm, you’ll be giving your organization the best shot at transitioning towards a more streamlined model of operation, and can rest assured that any investment made in our services will be returned with interest over time, often as soon as within the first few weeks of implementation of the procedures we’ll train your employees on.

Although transitioning to running an organization with as little excess fat as possible (running a ‘lean’ company) is hardly a groundbreaking development in the automotive and construction industries, the fact is that most processes that are in place in today’s organizations simply aren’t designed for that kind of radical shift.

The result of this lack of preparation is most often an endemic lack of attention to detail and quality control, which two absences can themselves wreak havoc on an otherwise well-meaning business’s chances of achieving their goals. Reliability and quality are the two most important concepts to keep in mind when considering to what degree FMEA should be employed—and it’s not a coincidence that those are the two areas which tend to suffer the most following implementation of a lean operational ethos.

One Of Canada’s Leading FMEA Training Courses

As the leading FMEA training organization in Canada, any employees that have come through our doors have left with a thorough understanding of what it means to use FMEA techniques in order to refine processes and minimize the probability of potential product or process failures catching your organization unawares in the future .

FMEA qualification can be a time-consuming process, but that’s the only resource it’ll take up. In terms of money and the capability of each member of your FMEA capable workforce, the training pays for itself, and measurable, tangible results can be expected to appear within a short while post-conclusion of the program.

FMEA Consulting

In addition to the FMEA training courses we offer, The ISO Edge also offers a complimentary FMEA consulting service. In cases where an automotive company needs FMEA-specific knowledge on an ad-hoc basis, this is often a good choice. With dozens of satisfied clients under our belts, we’ve come to understand exactly what it is organizations need when they’re looking for FMEA consulting services, and have streamlined our own process over the years to be as client-friendly as possible. This method of continually cutting the fat from our own processes has shown to be the best way to save everybody’s time in the long run—it’s part of our ethos, and a vital aspect of the FMEA consulting service we offer.

If you’ve been thinking about getting involved with an FMEA training or consulting, contact us today. We’d be delighted to talk over your options, as well as making clear exactly what we can offer you.
